3 SECONDS | You cannot spend more than 3 seconds at a time in the paint, or the other team gets the ball. |
3-POINT LINE | This is the area outside of the top of the key and then diagonally toward the closest corners of the court. Also has a magnetic pull for kids that are barely able to shoot that far! |
ASSIST | Pass made to a teammate who scores. |
BACKBOARD | A rectangular or fan-shaped surface to which the basket is attached. |
BACKCOURT | The half of the court, including the mid-court line, nearest the opponent's basket. |
BASEBALL PASS: | A one-handed, overhand pass. |
BASELINE | The out-of-bounds line behind each basket. |
BASKET | The 18" cylinder and the net. |
BOUNCE PASS | A pass which bounces on the floor before being caught. |
CENTER | An offensive player nearest the basket in a set offense. |
CHEST PASS | A 2-hand pass from the .chest of one player to that of a teammate. |
CROSS-OVER DRIBBLE (aka V-DRIBBLE) | A cross-over move by ball handler designed to change directions to shake a defender. |
DEFENSE: | Team not in possession of the ball |
DOUBLE-TEAM | Two defensive players guarding one offensive player. |
DOUBLE-DRIBBLE | Where you dribble with both hands at the same time. |
DRIVE | An offensive maneuver toward the basket by a player with the ball. |
FAST BREAK | Moving the ball quickly down the court to score before the defense can set up. |
FORWARD | The offensive side player in a set offense. |
FOUL | Infraction of the rules resulting in loss of possession or the awarding of one or more free throws. |
FREE THROW | An uncontested shot from behind the free throw line, awarded following a foul. |
FRONT COURT | The half of the court nearest a team's basket. |
GIVE AND GO | An offensive maneuver involving one player making a pass to a teammate and then moving to the basket for a return pass. |
GUARD | The offensive player who brings the ball up the court to begin the offensive maneuvers. |
HASH MARKS | These are the little painted lines on the floor around the paint, where players stand during free throw attempts. |
HELP SIDE OR WEAK SIDE | This is the side of the court where the ball isn't. |
JUMP BALL | Putting the ball in play by tossing it between two players in the center circle. Used to start a game. .- |
LANE | This is a term we will use for a designated area in our fast breaks. The lane is the area right beside the out-of-bounds line that runs down the length of the court. Both sides of the court have a lane. |
LAY-UP | A short-range shot off the backboard and into the basket. |
MAN-TO-MAN | Defense involving each player guarding one offensive player at all times. |
OFFENSE | Team in possession of the ball. |
OPEN LANE | This is where there is a straight path to the basket without a defender in the way. |
OUTLET PASS | This is where you get the rebound and have to go the length of the court. The 1st pass you make to start the ball down the court is the outlet pass. |
PRESS | Defense, either man-to-man or zone, involving pressure in both front and back courts. . |
REBOUND | A ball that bounces off the backboard and/or basket. |
SCREEN | Offensive maneuver involving one player positioning him/herself behind a defender in order to free a teammate for a pass or shot. |
STALL | An offensive maneuver involving holding the ball to allow time to run off the clock. |
STRONG SIDE OR BALL SIDE | This is the side that the ball is on. |
TECHNICAL FOUL | Infraction of the rules involving an unsportsmanlike act by a player or coach, resulting in I or 2 free throws and loss of possession. |
THE BLOCK | This is the one foot painted black rectangle on the floor on each side of the basket. |
THE PAINT | This is the painted or shaded area from the free throw line to the closest baseline. |
TOP OF THE KEY | The area outside the little circle that 1/2 surrounds the free throw line. |
TRAVELING | Moving the feet in any direction in excess of the prescribed limits while holding the ball. |
V-CUT | A move without the ball designed to shake a defender |
VIOLATION | Infraction of the rules which results in loss of possession & a throw-in from out of bounds. |
WALKING (aka travelling) | This is where you have the ball and you move both feet before you start your dribble. |
ZONE DEFENSE | Defense involving placement of players in designated areas in their backcourt, thereby requiring them to guard those offensive players entering that area. |
