Since many of our kids are just learning the game (hence 'learning session'), and so are many of our coaches, we provide some sample 'learning sessions' for you to use.
Learning Session #1Warm-up Up & Back Dribbling - First they dribble length of the court right-handed, then back with their left. Divide into 2 competitive teams and they do a dribble suicide relay. The first kid gets done and hands the ball to the next team mate in line, and so on. Ring of fire - Player in middle of circle with ball, one player in circle with ball. Middle player passes to right of circle player with ball. Circle player with ball passes to middle. Repeat until all the way around circle. Emphasize: step on passes, hands ready, crisp.Water break Backwards racing drill - Divide into 2 or 3 teams and have them compete in a relay. Layups - Have them start at half court and they have to do their lay-ups at 1/2 speed. Spend time with natural hand, then with their opposite hand. Emphasize go off correct foot. Water break Shooting - Pass drill - you will find this in Chapter 13 Screening - Divide into groups of 3. One person has the ball, one is the defender who guards the ball handler, and the last one is the screener who sets the screen on the defender. Keep on reminding them to roll to the basket after they set a SOLID SCREEN. No-dribble Scrimmage Just Have Fun Scrimmage |
