Team Draft Process Print E-mail

This is a sample draft process.  There is no standard CVYBA draft process.

  • The evaluation night gives raw scores for the players that need to be compiled that into something tangible to assign players to a pile used for the draft.
  • How you weigh results from stations and coaches makes a difference. If you have confidence your coaches are experienced that is not an issue. Some stations are more valuable than others. Some shared knowledge from past CVYBA experience: (a) Height makes a big difference, especially at younger ages. If they are a evaluated as a 2 and marked as tall, consider upgrading them to a 1; 3 becomes a 2, etc. (b) Aggressiveness makes a difference. If you had a drill that measured aggressiveness, (3v3 or steal the bacon) weigh that score high.
  • Once you get to the draft night, you'll walk into several tables with a blank roster sheet for each team # and color. Each coach picks their color/number, first come first serve. Once coaches are there the draft begins.
  • THIS IS A BLIND DRAFT.  You should not know what child you are picking when you select a registration form.
  • The number of teams to be drafted is determined by the Scheduler and the Registrar based on the projected number of players for that draft.  ALC’s should draft that number of teams regardless of perceived shortages or overages of players.
  • Each coach is assigned a team number/color.
  • Coaches alternate picking order to make it fair (e.g. left to right down table first round, right to left second round).
  • The ALC divides up players into the piles.  With 1 to 3 scoring, the dividing lines for the 7 piles are:
PileScores
CoachEither Coach or Assistant Coach’s child
"1"1.0000 to 1.6666
"2+"1.6667 to 2.0000
"2"2.0001 to 2.3333
"3+"2.3334 to 2.6666
"3"2.6667 to 3.0000

A sample spreadsheet that can be used to tally scores can be found here:  http://www.cvyba.org/documents/evalTemplate.xls
  1. First, coach’s and assistant coach's players are given to coaches.  Depending on where coach’s players score, the coach will receive one less draw during that round (e.g. if coach’s/assistant coach’s child is a #1, coach gets one less draw during #1 rounds).
  2. At any time during draft a coach can choose a random ‘mystery’ pick instead of normal pick.
  3. #1 :  Each coach draws a #1 one at a time until all #1's are drafted; teams that get less 1's start with #2+.
  4. #2+:  Teams that got less #1's are given first pick of the #2+'s. Once all have same number of #1/#2+ players, remaining #2+'s are mixed in with #2's
  5. #2:  Each coach draws a #2 one at a time until they are gone.
  6. #3+:  Teams that got less #2's are given first pick of the #3+'s.  Once all have same number of #2/#3+ players, remaining #3+'s are mixed in with #3's
  7. #3:  Each coach draws a #3 one at a time until they are gone.
  • After draft rounds are complete, coaches review any notes on registrations.  CVYBA strongly discourages any 'carpool' and other requests to put teammates together.  Some hardship cases have been voted on by the CVYBA board and granted (e.g. father in Iraq).  Others are taken on a case-by-case basis and vote by coaches.  All trades should be reported to the Board.  Twins are allowed on the same team of parents desire.
  • Once all teams are picked, coaches complete the roster/uniform sheets.  Coaches put each child's name on the roster and make sure the correct uniform size is filled in.
  • Coaches leave with team schedules and each player’s registration form that has phone number and e-mails.  Coaches should contact players that night to get started.  Practices start shortly after drafts.
